Three ways to Visby

Gotland is Sweden's largest island – and Visby, its medieval capital, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Three connections bring you to the island from various departure points.

Ferry on the Baltic Sea at sunset

Route 1 · Destination Gotland

Oskarshamn Visby

The more southern of the two mainland connections departs from the small port of Oskarshamn on the east coast of Småland. The crossing leads through open Baltic Sea waters and offers impressive coastal views in good weather.

Modern high-speed ships ensure a comfortable crossing with onboard restaurant, outdoor decks and cabin option – ideal for travelers from southern and central Sweden.

Route 2 · Destination Gotland

Nynäshamn Visby

The main route to Gotland departs from Nynäshamn, around 60 km south of Stockholm – directly accessible by commuter train from the central station. It is the most used connection and operates all year round.

As a year-round route, Nynäshamn offers the highest departure frequency and is therefore the first choice for Stockholm residents, short-break travelers and business travelers. Vehicles can also be transported comfortably.

Route 3 · Viking Line

Stockholm Visby

Summer only

Viking Line's mini cruise is the most atmospheric offering among the three connections: Ships departing in the evening from Stockholm's city harbor traverse the nocturnal archipelago and reach Visby in the early morning.

Onboard, guests can expect restaurants, a sauna, entertainment program and comfortable cabins. The return journey on the same or next evening makes the offering ideal for an extended weekend on Gotland.

The travel time depends on the chosen route. From Oskarshamn to Visby with Destination Gotland takes around 3 hours, from Nynäshamn about 3 hours 15 minutes. The night connection from Stockholm to Visby with Birka Gotland (Viking Line) takes around 16 to 17 hours – departure is in the evening, arrival the next morning.

Destination Gotland operates the Nynäshamn–Visby route year-round with 3 to 4 departures daily and the Oskarshamn–Visby route with 2 to 3 departures daily. During peak season, the frequency increases on individual connections. Birka Gotland (Viking Line) operates the Stockholm–Visby route seasonally with about two departures per week – including summer as well as Easter and Advent seasons.

On both Destination Gotland routes (Oskarshamn–Visby and Nynäshamn–Visby), cars, motorcycles and motorhomes can be taken. The vehicle is specified and charged separately when purchasing tickets. Early booking is especially recommended during the summer season as vehicle capacity is limited.

The Stockholm–Visby connection with Birka Gotland (Viking Line) does not have a vehicle deck. This route is exclusively for passengers without vehicles.

Pets are allowed on Destination Gotland ferries (Oskarshamn–Visby and Nynäshamn–Visby). The animal remains in the vehicle during the crossing; one visit to the vehicle deck is permitted. If you want to bring the pet to the passenger deck, you must book an animal space in advance.

Pets are not permitted on Birka Gotland (Viking Line, Stockholm–Visby). Exceptions are guide dogs and assistance dogs, which may travel free of charge on all ships.

The high-speed ferries of Destination Gotland feature a restaurant, a bistro, an onboard shop, a cinema as well as a children's play area. Outdoor decks and cabins are also available. All ships are wheelchair accessible.

Birka Gotland (Viking Line) offers a more comprehensive range as a cruise ship: restaurants, bars, a sauna, entertainment program as well as comfortable cabins for the night crossing.

Early booking is especially recommended for the summer months (June to August), as departures – particularly on weekends and holidays – are typically quickly sold out. This applies to both passenger spaces and vehicle capacity. Outside the peak season, availability is usually more generous, but advance reservation remains advisable.
