Three ways to Visby
Gotland is Sweden's largest island - and Visby, its medieval capital, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Three connections bring you to the island from different starting points.
Oskarshamn → Visby
The more southerly of the two mainland connections starts at the small port of Oskarshamn on the east coast of Småland. The crossing runs through open Baltic waters and offers impressive coastal views in good weather.
Modern high-speed ships make for a comfortable crossing with an onboard restaurant, outer decks and cabin options - ideal for travellers from southern and central Sweden.

Nynäshamn → Visby
The main route to Gotland starts in Nynäshamn, around 60 km south of Stockholm - directly reachable by commuter train (pendeltåg) from Stockholm Central. It's the most-used connection and runs year-round.
As the year-round route, Nynäshamn has the highest departure frequency, making it the first choice for Stockholmers, short-break travellers and business travellers. Vehicles can also be transported comfortably.

Stockholm → Visby
Viking Line's mini-cruise is the most atmospheric of the three connections: ships leaving Stockholm's city harbour in the evening cross the archipelago overnight and reach Visby in the early morning.
On board, guests will find restaurants, a sauna, entertainment and comfortable cabins. Returning the same evening or the next makes it ideal for an extended weekend on Gotland.

Which connection is right for you
Three connections lead to Gotland, and they suit very different travellers. The choice almost always comes down to getting to the port, not the crossing itself.
Coming from the Stockholm area, take Nynäshamn. The port lies 60 kilometres south of the city, with the ferry terminal just 400 metres from the station - reachable by commuter train (pendeltåg) from Stockholm Central in around an hour. If you'd rather skip the train ticket, take the Båtbussen: the connecting bus leaves from Cityterminalen 1 hour 45 minutes before each departure and stops right at the terminal.
Coming from southern and western Sweden, Oskarshamn is the shorter route. The port sits on the E22 along the east coast, so travellers crossing the Öresund Bridge or coming from Gothenburg avoid the detour via Stockholm.
The Stockholm connection isn't a ferry in the usual sense but a mini-cruise via Mariehamn - summer only, with no vehicle deck. If you simply want to reach Gotland, the other two routes get you there faster and year-round.
Getting to Gotland
There is no direct ferry to Gotland from outside Sweden. The route always runs via the Swedish mainland to one of the two ferry ports, Nynäshamn or Oskarshamn, and from there by ferry to Visby.

How long does the crossing to Gotland take?+
Crossing time depends on the route you choose. From Oskarshamn to Visby, the crossing with Destination Gotland takes around 3 hours, and from Nynäshamn about 3 hours 15 minutes. The overnight connection from Stockholm to Visby with the Birka Gotland (Viking Line) takes around 16 to 17 hours - it departs in the evening and arrives the next morning.
How often do the ferries to Gotland run?+
Destination Gotland runs the Nynäshamn-Visby route year-round with 3 to 4 departures daily and the Oskarshamn-Visby route with 2 to 3 departures daily. Frequency increases on some connections during peak season. The Birka Gotland (Viking Line) sails the Stockholm-Visby route seasonally, with around two departures a week - including in summer as well as at Easter and during Advent.
Can I bring my car on the ferry?+
On the two Destination Gotland routes (Oskarshamn-Visby and Nynäshamn-Visby), cars, motorbikes and campervans can be taken along. The vehicle is entered and charged separately when booking. Booking early is especially recommended in the summer season, as vehicle capacity is limited.
The Stockholm-Visby connection with the Birka Gotland (Viking Line) has no vehicle deck. This route is only suitable for foot passengers without a vehicle.
Can I bring pets on the ferry?+
Pets are allowed on Destination Gotland's ferries (Oskarshamn-Visby and Nynäshamn-Visby). Your pet stays in the vehicle during the crossing; one visit to the vehicle deck is permitted. If you want to bring your pet onto the passenger deck, you need to book a pet space in advance.
Pets are not allowed on the Birka Gotland (Viking Line, Stockholm-Visby). Exceptions are guide and assistance dogs, which travel free on all ships.
What facilities are available on board?+
Destination Gotland's high-speed ferries have a restaurant, a bistro, an onboard shop, a cinema and a children's play area. Outer decks and cabins are also available. All ships are wheelchair accessible.
As a cruise ship, the Birka Gotland (Viking Line) offers a wider range: restaurants, bars, a sauna, entertainment and comfortable cabins for the overnight crossing.
How far in advance should I book?+
Booking early is especially recommended for the summer months (June to August), as departures - particularly at weekends and on public holidays - tend to fill up quickly. This applies to both passenger seats and vehicle capacity. Outside peak season, availability is usually more generous, though booking ahead is still advisable.
