About Destination Gotland

Destination Gotland AB is Gotland's ferry operator. It is wholly owned by Gotlandsbolaget AB (Rederi AB Gotland) and operates the ferry service between Visby, Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn on behalf of the Swedish state; the contract with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) runs until 31 January 2035. The company has operated the state-contracted Gotland line since 1998. It is headquartered in Visby and employs around 400 full-time staff.

In 2023, Destination Gotland carried around 1.7 million passengers and 540,000 cars. In the summer season the operator runs up to 18 sailings a day; its quality and environmental management have been ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified since 2003.

Fleet

Three high-speed ferries with a service speed of 28.5 knots and ice class 1A operate on both routes. The sister ships M/S Visby (2018) and M/S Gotland (2019) are just under 200 metres long, carry 1,650 passengers and 500 cars, and run on liquefied natural gas and biogas; each has 98 cabin berths. The M/S Drotten (2003) is 196 metres long, carries up to 1,500 passengers and 500 cars, and has 115 cabin berths.

All three ships have lounges with reclining seats - aft, midship and forward - and the newer ships also have a children's lounge next to a play area, plus cabins with sofa, TV, toilet and USB sockets in outside, inside, pet, allergy-friendly or wheelchair-accessible variants. On board there is a restaurant, bistro, café and kiosk with an onboard shop, and an outdoor bar on Deck 10 in summer. Card payment is standard; cash is accepted in Swedish kronor and euros, with euros only in banknotes.

Routes to Gotland

Destination Gotland operates two routes, both year-round: Nynäshamn - Visby in just over three hours, the busiest connection with a direct commuter-rail link from Stockholm, and Oskarshamn - Visby in around three hours, the shorter approach for travellers from southern and western Sweden. Terminals are located in Visby at Färjeleden 14 (vehicles at Färjeleden 16), in Nynäshamn at Nynäsvägen 2B (vehicles at Fiskargränd 1), and in Oskarshamn at the Gotland terminal.

Check-in, vehicles & pets

Check-in opens at the latest 1 hour and 30 minutes before departure and closes 20 minutes before, for foot passengers and vehicles alike. Three hours before departure your boarding pass arrives by SMS and email, or you can collect it from a terminal kiosk; foot passengers scan it at the gate and wait in the departure hall - it can be up to 500 metres from the terminal entrance to the ship. In a car, every passenger shows their boarding pass, and adults also need a valid ID. Checked luggage is limited to 25 kilos, and only hand luggage may be taken into the passenger areas.

Cars, motorhomes, caravans, motorcycles and bicycles can travel too; the terminals at Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn have charging points for electric cars. Pets travel in the pet lounge with reclining seats and water bowls, or in a pet cabin with a window, vinyl sofa and toilet - you choose which when booking. If a sailing is full, the operator sells standby tickets at the port once the previous ferry has departed.

Tickets

Destination Gotland offers three fare types: Mini is the cheapest, paid at booking and neither changeable nor refundable. Flexi can be changed or cancelled up to one hour before departure, though the Flexi surcharge itself is not refunded; Flexi+ is fully refundable, surcharge included. Both Flexi fares must be paid up to 28 days before departure. With a car, you usually book a package covering the vehicle and up to five passengers (Alla+bilen, Alla+husbil), priced by vehicle length and non-refundable.

Discounted fares apply to children up to 12, young people up to 25, students, senior citizens, groups of ten or more, and holders of an Interrail or Eurail pass; Gotland residents pay the local Gotland rate. Booking online is cheapest, while phone or counter bookings carry a service fee. The route page's booking window shows the price for your date, and the fares overview explains how fare types are structured.
